The Williams/Smith branch of the Welburn family

Maria Welburn is one of our mysterious aunts. She was born February 1852 in Roxana. Because the entire neighborhood was skipped during the 1860 Federal Census, she never appears with the Welburn family. By 1870 Maria was old enough to be working out in service or married. Her connection to the family is confirmed through the 1915 deposition save gave for her older sister Nancy Jane Oliver.

It is suspected that Maria married 2 or 3 times. Her third husband was Maryland native William Henry Smith. The surname of her 1st husband is presumed to be Williams and the 2nd husband may have been a Brinney. During Maria & William's marriage, they resided in Radnor and then at 35 W. Spring Avenue in Ardmore, PA. She reportedly had 4 children.

  • Tassie Williams-Carpenter (born May 1870/71)
  • Hulda E. Williams (or Brinney) -Tingle (born January 1872)
  • Mary Jane "Janie" Williams (or Brinney)-Stanford-Weldon (born April 1876) her children: Marie Smith-Williams, John Henry Stanford, Cecil Stanford, Lois Stanford-Ingram, and 6 others which died in early childhood
  • Lucy Smith? (born ?)

Maria Welburn Williams Smith passed between 1920 & 1930.
