Isaac A. Welburn

Isaac A. Welburn, and his twin sister Alice Rickards, were born September 1859 in the farming community of Roxana. He makes his first Federal Census appearance in 1870 at the age of 10.

As evidenced by tax assessment records, Isaac remained in Sussex County at least through 1892 and helped farm the land owned by his parents. His first marriage took place about 1894, but there is no record of it in Delaware and his bride's name is unknown. In 1900 while residing with his older brother Thomas in Chester County PA, the Census notes his married status but his wife is not present.

Isaac married his 2nd wife Mary Denby (or Demby) about 1900 and by 1910 had relocated to Philadelphia. He worked as a coal yard driver. There were 2 children born during the marriage: Reba Mary Welburn (born 2/3/1900) and Ella Welburn-McFall. There has been mention of a son named Charles Welburn, but he has not been located in Census records and living descendants of Isaac are not familiar with him.

It is presumed that Mary Denby-Welburn died between 1910 and 1920 because Reba & Ella were in the care of their maternal grandmother Arrie Denby. Reba, Ella, and Arrie relocated to Mt. Vernon, Westchester County, NY.

After the second wife, Isaac's life becomes a bit confusing. By 1920 he moved to Camden County, NJ. He purchased a home in Winslow and shared this residence with a "wife" Mary (born 1892) and a "son" Elmer (born 1915). In 1930, Isaac is still in Winslow, but also rented a home in Clementon with another "wife" named Mary (born 1890). I don't know what to make of it, but to my knowledge there was only one Isaac Welburn born in Delaware.

Ella Welburn-McFall had no children. Reba Mary Welburn had five.
