The Tyre Branch of the Welburn Family
Sena Ann Welburn (born 2/8/1847) married her next door neighbor Mitchell Tyre (born 1/6/1832) on February 25, 1864. He was originally from St. Martin's Neck, Worcester County, Maryland and as a small child he moved to the Baltimore Hundred of Sussex County, Delaware.
Mitchell Tyre is described as a very petite man, standing only 5' 2" in height , weighing no more than 112 lbs., with a yellow complexion and brown eyes. Before marriage Mitchell worked as a oysterman. Afterwards he sharecropped on a 30-acre farm.
Shortly after the birth of their first child, Mitchell Tyre was forcefully drafted into the Union Army for service during the Civil War. To avoid leaving his wife & child, Mitchell "...pretended to be deaf and tried to runaway from the Marshall who shot at him once or twice and then Mitchell surrendered." Witnesses testified about how "...Sena cried so when he was taken away." While in Company D of the 10th US Colored Infantry, the hardships of military life took a toll on his health, landing Mitchell in the Post Hospital on more than one occasion, and plagued him for the remainder of his life.
