THE WELDONS

She had 2 daughters prior to marriage fathered by Edward Vickers & William Postley. Neighborhood elder Mary Short deposed that Martha "was first living at home or hired out when she 'catched up' with these children". According to the custom of the time, the girls were raised by their grandparents George & Mary.

Albert Weldon began to court Martha after his first wife, Jane Williams, died of cancer. They were married December 21, 1875. According to Luke Rickards, Martha's cousin, "I became acquainted with Albert Weldon a year or so after he came here from Maryland." It is suspected that Albert was owned by Solomon Weldon of Worcester County, MD. Albert was a veteran of the Civil War, serving alongside his future brother-in-law William Oliver in Company K of the 32nd US Colored Infantry. He was the company cook and was nicknamed "Red-Eyed Jack" because of his allergies.

In the late 1890's, Martha & Albert relocated to Chester County, PA and then eventually settled in Ardmore, PA. Albert died on May 5, 1902 and Martha passed in January 1924.

Martha had 8 children:
